In the heart of Kenya’s Turkana County, where the sands of time shift with stories untold, a young athlete’s journey from the quiet landscapes of Loima Sub-County to the bustling courts of Nairobi embodies the spirit of resilience and unwavering determination. Ekitoe John Adir, affectionately known as the ‘Urban Bandit,’ is out to etch his name in the annals of volleyball history through a tumultuous yet inspiring journey.
Adir’s voyage to volleyball began amidst the corridors of Matiliku Boys School, where fate intervened and redirected his destiny. A budding basketball talent with a promising scholarship, he found his calling in the world of volleyball under the tutelage of distinguished mentors, Justin Kigwari and David Lung’aho. Switching gears from basketball to volleyball, he emerged as a formidable middle blocker, guiding his team to unprecedented success, marking their debut at the National Secondary School Games played in Kisumu City in 2019.
The relentless pursuit of his passion hit an unexpected hiatus in 2020 when the ominous shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic halted the rhythm of life, stalling Adir’s fervent strides in the sport. Undeterred, he persisted, honing his skills within his local community and seizing every opportunity to keep the flame of his aspirations burning bright.
Venturing through training stints with renowned teams like Prisons Rift Valley, Strathmore University, and Equity Bank, Adir’s unwavering determination led him to the doors of Trailblazers. His bold introduction to Richard Joseph, the founder, marked a turning point in his journey. Welcomed into the folds of Trailblazers, Adir found a home to nurture his talent, earning his spot in the first team for the upcoming 2023/2024 season.
Jokingly nicknamed ‘Urban Bandit’, a name bestowed upon him by his teammates, resonates with Adir’s tenacity. His story serves as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path for aspiring athletes from humble beginnings to the grand arenas of success.
As he stands on the brink of his debut, Ekitoe John Adir’s journey from Turkana to Nairobi echoes a powerful narrative—a testament to the unbreakable resolve that fuels the pursuit of greatness.
